"Why Jesus?" Part 2
If you are anything like me, you often think to yourself that things need to be made right in the world. When I drive through my town and see the underside of a bridge has become a sleeping bag and tent residence for the homeless, or when I hear of a horrible case of abuse and neglect leading to the death of an innocent child, my heart aches for the world we live in. For all that is good, we cannot deny that there is a decay happening around us every day – a decay that leaves our world a bit less lovely for each coming generation. I took 1 minute to think about the things in our world that trouble me and keep me on my knees searching for answers from God in prayer. Here is what I was able to come up with in only 60 seconds.
Homelessness Heartbreak Addiction
Starvation Depression Greed
Incurable Diseases Loneliness Low Self-Esteem
Death Broken Homes Child Abuse
Poverty Inequality Human Trafficking
Natural Disasters Hatred Violence
The fact that I could have kept listing things is overwhelming. It makes me wonder to myself, how is it that when so much wrong is clearly seen, there are not more people fighting to see the wrongs made right? In a time when we should be united in making the only world we have a better place, it seems people become more self-centered and more divided as time goes on. To think and write about it literally brings me to tears.
Our world needs peace and harmony. We need an immutable standard of truth and goodness. Our hearts need to be re-sensitized to the evils of immorality and suffering. We need to be reawakened to the joys of kindness, integrity, and virtuous conduct. And the evidence that the remedy to these causes is beyond anything earthly or human is that these things continue to go unresolved. If mankind had any earthly tool or human capacity to fix our own world and our own hearts, we would have done it a long time ago. We need a rescuer. We need someone who loves the world so much that they would be willing to do whatever it takes to save it and has the power to pull it off. We need Jesus.
The inconceivable reality of who Jesus is, God and Man, is what qualifies Him to be exactly what we need. Only the power of a sovereign God, strong enough to create the world, can heal the broken world. Only God can see the hidden hardness in our hearts and reach in to provide the softening cure. Only God. And only a Man can relate to our weaknesses and have mercy on us. Only a Man can see our certain guilt, consider how He Himself (though sinless) has been tempted to commit such offences, and extend grace instead of judgement and condemnation. Only the Man, Jesus. If not Jesus, then we are left to perish in our own miseries, and God loves us too much for that.
He gave us Jesus. The One who never did anything wrong but was willing to die to make things right. The selfless One, ever living and interceding for us. The One who is unceasing in pleading the case for our incurable inclination to do wrong things. The One who is always petitioning God for mercy for our transgressions and using His own life and blood to cover our guilt. We increasingly rebel against God’s original, perfect design. We are responsible for so much destruction. God’s righteousness says someone must pay; and Jesus says, “Let it be Me.” He was born for this cause – come into the world to save and heal what would otherwise be lost to destruction. His ultimate goodness gives Him the power to rescue us from everything that is not good. His incorruptible nature prevents Him from being corrupted in His pursuit to rescue us. His love for us makes Him unwilling to fail in rescuing us.
He promises to set everything right in the end through heaven. In the meantime, He offers to rescue us by His Spirit and give us the essence of heaven right here on earth. The life accepting of Jesus receives strength in weakness, comfort in sorrow, unshakable joy, peace beyond all reason, defense in every attack, freedom from every fear and failure, liberation from mental and emotional bondage, and unconditional love.
I experience this “heaven on earth” time and time again each day as I wake and choose to continue to follow Him. I am a living witness that although life is filled with trials and the world grows harsher and colder, there is rescue in Jesus.
